- Have burners and boilers serviced annually.
- Clean heat ducts and cold air returns.
- Inspect and sweep chimneys.
- Remove dust and dirt from electrical heating elements.
- Wood stoves and pipes should be cleaned and inspected for wear
and tear.
- Test all smoke detectors and replace any old batteries. Also,
make sure that you have enough smoke detectors installed throughout
the house.
- Place all medicines and cleaning products away from children
and pets.
- Inspect all appliances for wire damage and make sure no electrical
outlet is overloaded.
- Store any flammable materials, such as gasoline or propane in
safety containers away from the house. Do not use gasoline or
other flammables inside the house.
- During winter months, turn off valves and drain pipes for outside
faucets to avoid freezing.
- Don't leave cooking untended.
- Don't use the oven to heat the house.
- Don't forget to extinguish all candles.
- Read and follow safety instructions for any portable heaters.
Do not place these items closer than 3 feet to beds or other objects.
